Sales of electric cars in Europe grew 10 times

In the first half of 2011 the sales of electric cars in Europe grew 10.3 times up to 5,222 cars. However the share of environmentally-friendly cars in the European car market is still insignificant – at present it is 0.07% vs 0.01% a year ago. According to JATO Dynamics, the government programs of electric car sales promotion, which are active in many European countries, as well as subsidies do not affect the sales of environmentally-friendly cars directly.

Thus in the first half of the year the leader in plug-in car sales was Germany (1.020 cars), despite the fact that subsidy in this country is one of the lowest in Europe (€380). In Denmark the government compensates record €20,588 for the electric car purchase, however only 283 environmentally-friendly cars were bought here. The subsidy for electric car purchase is almost the same in Spain (€6,500) and Great Britain (€6,400) but the results differ almost 5 times – 599 cars in Britain vs 122 cars in Spain. A little less electric cars were sold in Switzerland – 111 units, although the government subsidies only €470. We should also mention Norway, which is on the third place in Europe (850 electric cars sold) and the leader in the share of such cars in the local market – 1.23%. 

According to JATO Dynamics specialists, government programs of electric car sales promotion are ineffective due to the high price for such cars. At the same time the electric car sales depend on such factors as population income level, automobilization level and, first of all, the level of development of electric filling stations infrastructure in the region. Meanwhile, the experts expect, that as the market of electric cars in Europe grows the role of government subsidies for purchase of such cars will also increase.
