The Chinese car market strengthened its fall in September

In September, passenger car sales in China decreased by 11.6% and they were 2 million 394 thousand 100 units. According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), for the first nine months of 2018, the Chinese car market grew by 1.5% up to 20 million 409 thousand cars, remaining the largest in the world.

Last month, Volkswagen and its joint ventures kept sales at the same level as in the last year, by selling 383,500 cars (-5.7%). Thus, the German carmaker remains the leader in the market of China.

According to the CAAM forecast, in 2018 the Chinese car market will grow by about 3% compared to the last year, when 24 million 718 thousand cars were sold. Stabilization of demand, in particular, is due to the increase in this year's tax on the purchase of new cars with an engine capacity of up to 1.6 liters to 10%. In addition, the growth of car sales may be constrained by the policy of the authorities of Chinese megacities to restrict registrations of new cars in the framework of the fight against environmental pollution and traffic jams. Thus, against the background of continuing economic growth, the main demand for cars is expected from the cities and provinces located in the centre of the country. Meanwhile, the government of China stimulates actively the sales of electric vehicles, the introduction of a tax on which was postponed until the end of 2020.
