The Chinese car market fell by 5% in July

Sales of passenger cars fell by 5.3% in China in July and they were 1 million 589 thousand 500 units. According to the Chinese Association of Automobile Manufacturers (SAAM), the Chinese car market grew by 3.4% up to 13 million 364 thousand 500 cars for seven months of 2018, by remaining the largest in the world.

In the last month Volkswagen and its joint ventures kept the sales at the level of last year, by selling 309,400 cars (+ 0.1%). Thus, the German auto concern remains the leader in the market of the Celestial Empire.

According to the forecast of SAAM, in 2018 the Chinese car market will grow by about 3% in compare with the previous year, when there were sold 24 million 718 thousand cars. Stabilization of demand, in particular, is due to the increase of the tax up to 10% on the purchase of new cars with an engine capacity of up to 1.6 L from this year. In addition, the growth of car sales may be constrained by the policy of the authorities of Chinese megacities to limit the registration of new cars within the fight against the pollution and traffic jams. Thus, against the background of the continuing economic recovery, the main demand for cars is expected from cities and provinces located in the interior of the country. Meanwhile, the PRC government is actively stimulating sales of electric vehicles, the introduction of a tax on which was postponed until the end of 2020.
