Governor of St. Petersburg does not rule out the return of GM


The US carmaker General Motors, which stopped on July 1st, 2015 the production in St. Petersburg, didn’t sell the industrial site and possibly it is waiting for what will happen in the market, said the governor, Georgy Poltavchenko.

«GM shut down production, but they denied interested parties in the sale of the plant. I do not rule out that they are waiting to see how the situation will develop further, what will be the situation on the market, and maybe they will resume the production", - the agency "Prime " cited Mr. Poltavchenko. According to the governor, the city authorities are trying to provide support to automotive companies. Currently St. Petersburg has three automotive plants - Hyundai, Nissan and Toyota.

"In general, we try to help the automotive cluster, and we do it. In the spring we applied to the government with a request to keep until the end of 2015 and to extend for 2016 the measures of state support of automakers in the framework of federal programs. By decision of the government, in November of 2015 the federal budget allocated to support the automotive industry allocated additionally almost 5 billion rubles. Another billion was allocated for the program of preferential leasing of vehicles", - said the governor of St. Petersburg.

GM on March 18th announced about the withdrawal of the brand Opel from Russian market and that by mid-2015 it will preserve the plant in St. Petersburg. Earlier, the plant employed about one thousand employees. After the concern announced about the preservation of the plant, the employees were offered compensation packages in the amount of seven salaries.

The company produces models Chevrolet Cruze, TrailBlazer, Opel Astra and a few models of Cadillac, it also planned the launch of Chevrolet Tahoe in 2015.
