GM has no plans to close the plant in St. Petersburg

The US carmaker General Motors has no plans to close the production in St. Petersburg, told the governor of the northern capital, Georgy Poltavchenko.

Earlier, in a number of media it was reported that General Motors may close its plant in St. Petersburg because of the political situation. However, the company denied this information and said that the plant is operating normally. Now four plants - GM, Hyundai, Nissan and Toyota operate in the city, says the agency "Prime".

"The company has no plans to close the production in St. Petersburg. Now there is the optimization of production at the plant with account of the economic environment and changes of exchange rates”, - said the governor of St. Petersburg.

According to him, the production volumes at car plants of St. Petersburg will decrease in 2014 in comparison with 2013 year. "St. Petersburg automakers are not in a vacuum and common problems impact on them. In 2014, the production volume of automotive cluster will be reduced, first of all, due to lower production at the "GM Auto" - said Mr. Poltavchenko.

According to the agency “Auto-Dealer-SPb”, for 11 months in 2014 the St. Petersburg automakers Toyota, GM, Nissan and Hyundai produced 329,800 new passenger cars, which is less by 8% than the last year.

"There is not just fear, but certain risks associated with our automotive clusters in 2015. There is reason for optimism, as well as causes for concern”, - said the governor. So, he said, Toyota and Nissan are expanding their productions. In December, the Toyota plant began the production of the updated model Camry, it was also launched new shops. At the plant Nissan it was launched the second stage. It is expected that the capacity of these plants will grow twice.

"In general, no one will undertake to predict the situation in the automotive industry. The ruble dropped the cost of production of cars in Russia and in St. Petersburg, and hence the overall profitability of the plants. Therefore, we cannot say that the risks are predetermined. But they are possible”, - said Mr. Poltavchenko.

Four car plants of St. Petersburg produced 13 car models: Chevrolet Cruze, Opel Astra, Chevrolet Trailblazer, Cadillac ATS, Cadillac CTS, Cadillac SRX, Nissan Teana, Nissan X-Trail, Nissan Murano, Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota Camry, Hyundai Solaris, Kia Rio. Five of them - Solaris, Rio, Camry, Cruze and the X-Trail - entered the Top 25 best-selling car models in Russia for the first 11 months of 2014.
