How has Russian car market changed in 2022?


This year, a kind of "tectonic shift" took place in the car market of the Russian Federation, experts of the agency "AUTOSTAT" reported with reference to the data of JSC "PPK"*. If we compare the beginning of 2022 and the end of autumn, then there is a radical redistribution of market shares by country of origin. Thus, the share of European brands, which were leaders in the new passenger car market, decreased 3.5 times (from 27.6% to 7.9%).

They have lost the most by joining the anti-Russian sanctions. Japanese brands at the beginning of the year occupied almost 18% of the market, and now - about 7%, i.e. about three times reduction of share. The reason is the same. "Koreans", who did not join the sanctions, but faced the production difficulties (due to a violation of logistics in the supply of components), now have a half of share (12%) than it was (23.8%). The share of American brands decreased slightly (from 1% to 0.8%), but it was still very small. In fact, US companies left the passenger segment long before the events that took place at the end of February and turned the structure of the new passenger car market in Russia upside down. Recall that after the start of the special war operation, a number of foreign companies imposed sanctions against our country, which also affected the automotive industry. Deliveries of cars to the Russian Federation on their part were stopped, and many foreign car plants that worked there were closed.

Yes, parallel import has been launched, but so far it is not able to compensate for the lost volumes. Against this background, the market share of domestic and Chinese brands began to grow rapidly. They do not support sanctions and supply cars to Russia. Also, Haval plant in Tula region continues to operate. As a result, the share of Russian brands increased more than 2 times, and "Chinese" - more than 3 times. And in total they already own over 70% of the market, although at the beginning of the year they had a little less than 30%.
