Dynamics of the market of new Chinese cars in Russia

Against the background of the growth of the share of Chinese brands in the Russian market, the experts of the agency "AUTOSTAT" (with reference to the data of JSC "PPK" *) decided to analyze the development of this segment in dynamics - from month to month, since 2019. The top graph, which reflects the total volume of purchases of new Chinese passenger cars in general, allows us to see clearly how this segment grew by 14% in 2019 to a volume of 32.6 thousand units, in 2020 - by 62% to 53 thousand units, in 2021 - by 116% to 114.3 thousand cars.

It was in 2021 that the main records of the "Chinese" fell, when their monthly figures repeatedly exceeded the volume of 10 thousand units. The resulting curve also allows us to see the fall of the "Chinese" segment (along with others) in the spring of 2020, when car dealerships were closed for some time due to the start of the coronavirus pandemic, and in the spring of 2022, against the backdrop of the beginning of the Ukrainian crisis. However, since April, the curve goes up sharply, as automakers from the PRC have not joined the anti-Russian sanctions and are actively continuing to work in our market.

As for the lower charts, they allow us to see the market dynamics of the top-five of Chinese brands - Haval, Chery, Geely, Changan, EXEED. It is obvious that so far the main growth driver of the "Chinese" segment in the Russian market is the competition between the first three brands.
