Dynamics of the Russian car market in Q1 of 2022


The drop in sales of new cars in Russia in the first quarter of this year (-62.9%, according to AEB) affected both market segments - both mass and premium. Thus, in the mass segment, the sale of cars fell by 28.6% to 237,447 units. Nevertheless, eight brands included in the TOP-25 in terms of sales showed a positive trend. According to the results of three months, the Chinese EXEED showed the highest growth (almost 4.5 times), which is slightly inferior to the American Chevrolet (growth by 3.1 times).

In both cases, this is due to the low base of the previous period. In addition to EXEED, four more brands from China were in the "positive" zone: Geely (+58.8%), GAC (+34.5%), Haval (+26.7%) and Changan (+11.7%). They were also joined by German Opel (+30.6%) and Japanese Mitsubishi (+12%). Accordingly, the rest 17 mass brands were "in the red." The Czech Skoda (-47%) has the strongest drop among them, followed by the Japanese Suzuki (-46%) and Subaru (-44.6%), as well as the German Volkswagen (-43.7%). For other brands, the fall was from 37.2% (LADA) to 1.3% (Chery).

The premium segment fell 36% to 25,169 units. Here, the vast majority of brands (10 out of 13) also lost sales. Cadillac and Lexus feel the worst, with sales volumes down 73.4% and 67.4% in Q1 2022, respectively. Another eight brands recorded a double-digit decline - from 42.7% (Audi) to 11.4% (Jeep). Only three premium brands showed the positive market dynamics. These are Genesis (+4.7%), Jaguar (+10.5%) and Infiniti (+13.7%).
