"AUTOSTAT OMNIBUS" is an annual project of the analytical agency "AUTOSTAT", which is a survey of car owners according to a certain methodology and makes it possible to compare assessment indicators over time.

In the spring of 2022 (in addition to the annual autumn wave), the fourth spring wave of the project will be released, which is aimed at identifying consumer preferences in the purchase and operation of summer tires.

Dynamics of car sales by segments in 2020


Last year, sales of new passenger cars in Russia were 1 million 486.5 thousand units, which is lower by 8.9% than in 2019. The experts of the analytical agency "AUTOSTAT" noted that negative dynamics is observed in all market segments presented in the infographics.

Traditionally, SUV remains the largest segment of the Russian market. Thus, for the last year, 720.8 thousand crossovers and SUVs were sold (-4%), which is 48.5% of the total number of sold cars in Russia. Leadership is held by Hyundai Creta (73.5 thousand units; + 2.9%), followed by Toyota RAV4 (36.4 thousand units; + 19%) and Volkswagen Tiguan (33 thousand units; -11,4 %).

The second place is occupied by segment B, the share of which was 37.6% the last year. Cars of this class in January - December of 2020 sold 558.9 thousand units (-8.3%). Domestic LADA Granta is the leader (126.1 thousand units; -7.2%). LADA Vesta is the second one in terms of sales (107.3 thousand units; -3.7%), and KIA Rio finished the top three (88.1 thousand units; -4.8%).

Next, with a huge lag, is the D segment, which accounted for 4.8% in 2020. Sales of cars of this class were 71.3 thousand units, by showing a drop (-22.5%). In this segment, the following models are leading: Toyota Camry (27.4 thousand units; -19.5%), KIA K5 / Optima (19.9 thousand units; -22.7%), Hyundai Sonata (6 thousand units; -17%).

The next segment in terms of sales is C segment, which accounted for 4%. Its volume in 2020 was 59.6 thousand sold cars. And that is in line with the 30.7% fall that was the strongest in the market. Note also that the share of each of the remaining segments is lower than 3%, and in the PickUp and Coupe / Cabriolet segments it does not even reach 1%.
