Leaders and outsiders of the Russian car market in the 1st half of 2020

In January - June of this year, almost 636 thousand new cars and LCVs were sold in our country (according to AEB). This is lower by 23.3% than for the same period of 2019.

Russian LADA brand holds traditionally the leadership in the Russian market - in the first half of the year its sales reached 132.6 thousand units, having decreased by 23.9%. Thus, its share was equal to 20.8%. Korean brands KIA (81.2 thousand units) and Hyundai (63.9 thousand units) are the next in the ranking, by showing a fall (more than 27.2%). In the TOP-10 of brands, all, without exception, show a market decline, with the Korean Hyundai having the largest drop (-27.5%).

In the model structure of the Russian market, the first two lines are occupied by representatives of LADA. Granta remains the leader - for six months it has sold almost 50 thousand units, which is lower by 22% than a year ago. Vesta is the second one; its sales fell by 23.6% to 42.6 thousand cars. The title of the best foreign car is still kept by KIA Rio - in the first half of the year, sales of cars of this family reached 36.2 thousand units (-23.8%). Hyundai Creta crossover (29.6 thousand units; -14.7%) and Volkswagen Polo sedan (21.3 thousand units; -23.3%) were also in the top-5.

The best sales dynamics are shown by the new Toyota RAV4 crossover, which is in the 7th position of the rating. Despite the general market decline, its sales grew by 20.9% to 16.1 thousand units. Experts noted that this model was the only one in the TOP-20, which shows the positive dynamics. The rest 19 models went to “minus”, and the deepest drop was recorded at Skoda Rapid (-48.6%).
