Leaders and outsiders of the Russian car market in 2019

Despite the fact that in December the Russian car market showed an increase of 2.3%, its volume fell by the same amount in 2019, reaching 1 million 759.5 thousand new cars and LCVs. The domestic market LADA traditionally holds leadership in the Russian market - its sales reached 362.4 thousand units the last year, an increase of 0.6%.

This allowed it to increase the market share to 20.6%. The Korean brands KIA (225.9 thousand units) and Hyundai (178.8 thousand units) are the next in the ranking, but if the first one shows a slight decrease (-0.7%), then the second one shows a slight increase (+ 0.3%). Thus, the share of the three listed automakers is one third of the whole Russian car market. Note that in the TOP-10 of brands, more than a half (6) shows the market growth, with the highest of Mercedes-Benz (+ 11.3%).

There are 4 brands in the “negative” zone, and sales of the Japanese Nissan fell the most (-19.7%). In the model structure of the Russian market, the first two lines are occupied by representatives of LADA. After 4 years, Granta became the leader again - it was sold 135.8 thousand units in 2019, which is 27.8% higher than in 2018. Vesta fell to the second place, with sales up 2.9% to 111.5 thousand cars. For the third year in a row KIA Rio keeps the title of the best foreign car in the country - the sale of cars of this family reached 92.5 thousand units in the last year (-7.7%).

Then two more “Koreans” follow – Hyundai Creta (71.5 thousand units; + 5.8%) and Hyundai Solaris (58.7 thousand units; -10.5%). It is also worth noting that if LADA Granta in the TOP-20 of the model rating has the best growth (+ 27.8%), then another representative of the domestic brand - LADA XRAY - shows the strongest drop (-16.8%).
