Terms of ownership of cars in Russia

Analytical agency "AUTOSTAT" conducted a study of the terms of ownership of cars in Russia, which changed their owners in 2017. According to the results of the study, the average period of ownership of a bought new car reached 57 months (or 4 years and 9 months) in the last year. We note that this indicator continues to grow and since 2008 it has increased by 21 months.

In the last few years, this process was driven by the economic crisis: the price growth for cars, falling real incomes and uncertainty about the future impacted negatively on the desire of Russians to change cars. In the mass segment, the average term of ownership of a car (58 months) is almost the same as in the whole country (about 5 years). But the owners of premium cars - due to the broader financial possibilities - are ready to change cars more often.

The term of ownership of cars in the premium segment in 2017 was approximately 46 months, i.е. for 1 year less than in mass segment. About the same pattern is observed among owners of cars of local assembly - the average ownership of such cars is 49 months, while this figure for the cars of domestic brands and imported cars reaches 63 months that is more than 5 years.

According to experts of the analytic agency "AUTOSTAT", in the last year, most of the new cars were changed after 4 - 5 years after purchase - so 14% of car owners did. After 3 - 4 years of operation they were replaced by 13% of the owners. The same share of those, who have traveled by car for more than 10 years. Another 12% of car owners changed the car after 5 - 6 years from the date of purchase, and 10% did it in 2 - 3 years.
