The new Mazda3 was introduced in St. Petersburg

Mazda introduced the new generation Mazda3. Its presentation took place in five cities. Besides St. Petersburg, the new hatchback made its debut in Istanbul, London, New York and Melbourne. The brand-new will come on sale at the end of the year, Vedomosti newspaper reports. 

The new generation Mazda3 carries out traditions of the Shinari concept car, unveiled in 2010 in Milan, and the new Kodo style. The Mazda CX-5 and the Mazda6 have already been done out in this style. The task of the designers was to keep Kodo body lines, distinctive in the Mazda6, but to create more compact and more sporty car, Peter Birtwhisle, chief of design for Mazda Europe, explained during the presentation . 

The model will be available with three engines: 1.5-liter 100 h.p. and two 2.0-liter 120 h.p and 165 h.p. petrol engines as well as 2.2-liter 150 h.p. diesel engine. Top speed is 182 km/h for the car with 1.5-liter engine and 210 km/h for diesel and 2.0-liter engine versions.    

“The previous generation Mazda3 used the Ford Focus base. The new generation was developed on its own platform, - Wojciech Halarewich, vice-president of  Mazda Motor Logistics Europe, says, - today Ford has only 2% Mazda share, so the American brand does not control our developments”. Previously Ford had owned 30% of the Japanese brand. According to general director of Mazda Motor Rus, Jorg Schreiber, Ford base was heavy and expensive in production. He did not comment on the expected price of the new model, having mentioned that “there won’t be anything extraordinary, one should be careful in this segment”. 

The new model is planned to be manufactured in Japan, the variant of the new model production at Mazda-Sollers joint venture in Vladivstok is still out of consideration as the enterprise does not have enough capacity for such a mass model, Schreiber explained. He also mention that Russia is one of the key markets for the brand. The Mazda3 will generate about 30% of the total brand’s production, and the new model will come on sale at the end of the year, Halarewich said.
