Premium-brands increase their share in the St. Petersburg market

According to Auto-Dealer-SPb agency, from January till May 79,712 new passenger cars and LCV were sold in St. Petersburg (-4%). 16,743 cars were sold in the city in May, that is 12% less than a year ago. Moreover, this result is less than sales in May 2011. Renault remains the leader in the city market. 

The decrease in sales in the St. Petersburg market follows the total Russian market. “Having sold out last year’s stocks, dealers risk accumulating them again in the current market situation, which has already resulted in discounts for the models of 2013,  - general director of Auto-Dealer-SPb, Mikhail Chaplygin says. – The market decrease can slow down and even change into growth in the second half of the year. This will result from low base of the end of the previous year and government sales promotion measures, which are being considered federally”. 

At the same time, like during the crisis, the total market breakdown is accompanied by growth in premium-class car sales. From January till May the sales of BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, LandRover, Volvo, Lexus, Infiniti, Porsche, Jaguar and Cadillac increased by 15% (up to 8,958 cars) as compared to the previous year. In May premium brands’ sales grew by 11%. Negative dynamics was only registered by Volvo, Infiniti and Cadillac. The share of premium brands in the St. Petersburg market is 11% vs. 9% in January-May 2012. 

If the current sales dynamics continues, the city market might not reach 200,000 car level in 2013, which is less than the level of the pre-crisis 2008, when over 220,000 cars were sold, and the last year’s result.
