Ukrainian car industry is losing its position in the Russian market

Ukrainian automakers are rapidly losing positions in the Russian car market, which held recently a significant share of the total production of ZAZ and “Bogdan Motors”. The reason for that is the scrappage fee for imported cars, which was introduced in Russia in the autumn of the last year.

However, the Ukrainian brands show the most serious drop in comparison with the rest participants of the market. So, for five months in 2013, car sales of ZAZ fell by 67% to 1,641 vehicles in Russia. Sales drop of Bogdan vehicles was 65% - up to 1,186 units, wrote the magazine “Autocenter”.

“The only reason, why there was such fall, is a scrappage fee, which applies to vehicles of Ukrainian production”, - the director of marketing and economic analysis of the association “Ukrautoprom”, George Ovsyannikov, informed “Autocentre”. “It's not a secret that the main competitive advantage of our cars is the price. It is difficult to neutralize the scrappage fee in a price, because the production of low-cost cars is not highly profitable. As a consequence, exports of passenger cars from Ukraine to Russia fell 3.6 times by the results of the first quarter”.

Meanwhile, the scrappage fee, which was introduced originally only for imported cars in order to protect the local car industry, by the request of the European Commission from July 1st of this year, will be extended to cars that are made in Russia. In this regard, Ukrainian automakers hope that Ukrainian cars once again become competitive in equal terms.
