Magna will increase the capacity in St. Petersburg

Canadian automotive supplier Magna will invest EUR 100 million in the expansion of production facilities in St. Petersburg.

According to the newspaper “Kommersant”, within the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, which is held in the city from June 20th to 22nd, the Smolny will sign a memorandum of understanding with “Piterform”, 80% of which is shared by the Canadian automotive supplier Magna and Korean one - Shin Young Co. According to one of the city plants, the company plans to build another plant in St. Petersburg. Investment is estimated at EUR 100 million.

Today, “Piterform” has plants in industrial zones Shushari (the press production) and Kamenka (the assembly) that supply parts to plants Hyundai, GM, Nissan. In addition, Magna produces plastic parts for Ford in the rented space (12 sq. m.) in the territory of Izhorsky plants.

Director of the agency “Auto-Dealer-SPb”, Michael Chapligin, states that the new project of Magna in St. Petersburg is not surprising. “The company realizes several projects in the field of automotive industry in Russia, and our city is becoming a key one for the company in this direction. Today, the capacity expansion can occur at in two areas of the city, in Kamenka or Shushary. Reserve of area and the prospects of production volumes increasing in St. Petersburg plants allow Canadian investors to build a concrete plan for the construction of new buildings”, - says Mr. Chaplygin.

Magna has also a number of announced major projects in the Russian regions. Thus, the company will invest RUB 1.7 billion in new production in Nizhny Novgorod, where it plans to produce bumpers, instrument panels, hatches of tanks, radiator frame. In addition, in March of the last year, the company announced about the creation of a joint venture with the plant “Autotor” of automotive cluster with the production capacity of 350,000 vehicles per a year.
