Premium segment grows faster than the market

Sales dynamics in the passenger car segment of “premium” brands is ahead of the market for the last four years. The director of the analytical agency AUTOSTAT, Sergey Tselikov, said about it at the conference “The automotive market in Russia. Results and prospects”. According to Mr. Tselikov, annual sales of premium-brands are twice more than in 2008, while the whole market only reached the pre-crisis level. The summary dynamics of the Premium segment in 2012 is 63.5% in comparison with 2008 and the double growth was fixed for German brands - Mercedes (116%), Audi (103%), BMW (92%).

According to Mr. Tselikov, it is caused by several factors. First, the number of wealthy people with revenues significantly above average level grows in our country. Secondly, the premium brands are launching systematically more affordable models in different segments (eg. BMW 1-Series and X1, Audi A1 and Q3, etc.).

The expert also compared the structure of markets in Europe and Russia and he resumed that the premium segment has still a significant growth potential.

So, for example, BMW and Mercedes-Benz had 1.3% of our market in 2012, and they had 6.4% and 5.3% in Europe, respectively. In Germany these brands have even more than 10% of the market each. It is about the same ratio for Audi, ie their market share in Europe is about 4 times more than in Russia”, - says Sergey Tselikov. According to Mr. Tselikov, the potential for premium brands in the Russian market has not been exhausted, and despite the overall stabilization, this segment will continue to grow by 15-25% per a year.
