The beginning of the year brought clear changes in the dynamics of the Russian car market. Against the background of declining sales of cars of the mass segment (in January and February, they went "in minus"), the premium one, on the contrary, feels quite confident and stable: for the first month of the year it showed an increase of 13.4%, in February sales grew by 14 3%.

Most of the brands of this segment show a positive trend, and the growth of some brands in February was expressed in three figures: Genesis (+ 272.7%), Volvo (+ 112.2%). And although it is precisely these brands that do not make the general “weather” in the segment due to small volumes, but taking into account other indicators, their results only confirm the general trend in the market.

By and large, the driving force of the dynamic growth of the segment as a whole are two brands - BMW and Mercedes-Benz, since they together account for more than 50% of all premium sales. Both leaders began the year with positive dynamics, although BMW is in a slightly better situation.

According to experts of the analytic agency AUTOSTAT, the trend towards a steady growth of the premium segment did not begin in January of 2019, but approximately from the middle of 2018: in August, sales of premium cars for the first time in a year showed a double-digit growth (+ 14.8%) of sales and since then this indicator has not dropped below 7%.

“The consolidated trend can be explained by the current update of the model range and the appearance of completely new models at a number of premium brands,” - commented Andrei Toptun, the head of analytics department of AUTOSTAT agency. “In addition, car buyers of this segment, as a rule, do not have problems with cash (as opposed to those who choose cars of the mass segment) and have shorter ownership periods of such cars."
