Engine oils: whether import substitution is in question?

We have been talking about import substitution in the automotive sector for many years and occasionally there are some facts indicating some progress in this direction. In turn, the experts of the analytic agency "AUTOSTAT" asked the question: what is the situation on the market of engine oils? It is not a secret that a serious moment in the promotion of domestic products is its competitiveness in price and quality. Our latest study on this topic has shown that the price advantage gained by domestic producers due to the economic crisis is dynamically disappearing.

For example, in January of 2018, the difference in average retail prices of semi-synthetic oil of domestic and foreign producers in Moscow was about 105 rubles per liter, which is quite comparable to the difference of 93 rubles in 2014, i.e. in the pre-crisis period. Thus, the gain of domestic oils in the price is not so obvious. As far as quality is concerned, this issue is to be considered in the specific examples.

For example, the share of synthetic engine oils in the products of well-known foreign manufacturers EXXONMOBIL and BP-CASTROL is about 75% and 78%, and in the products of SHELL and TOTAL is up to 80%. At the same time, more than 50% of the assortments of these companies meet the requirements of the highest quality API SN. Among the domestic manufacturers of engine oils, only two companies have the best competitive performance: LUKOIL and GAZPROMNEFT, which have a little more than 50% of synthetic oils in their assortment, and at least 40% of their products meet the requirements of API SN class.
