The dynamics of sales of new cars in Russia 1998-2015

For 20 years it was assembled more than 10 million foreign cars in Russia

According to the analytic agency "AUTOSTAT", for the 20-year history of the Russian car market, 10.35 million passenger cars of foreign brands were assembled in the territory of our country. As analysts say, it was 20 years ago, at the end of 1990s, a new strategy of the Russian automotive industry was formed in Russia, aimed at assembling foreign cars.

The first was the Rostov plant "Red Aksai", in which it was established the production of two models of Daewoo - Nexia and Espero (then it was transformed into TagAZ). In 1997, the Kaliningrad Avtotor, which assembled three models of KIA - Avella, Clarus and Sephia, was opened. A little later, a joint venture Avtoframos was opened on Moskvich, where they began to master the production of Renault models.

The most active period of creating assembly capacities in Russia began in 2002, when the Ford plants in Vsevolozhsk and GM-AVTOVAZ in Togliatti started working. Gradually, it was mastered the production of a large number of foreign brands, including Volkswagen, Skoda, Audi, BMW, Nissan, Toyota, Mazda, Opel, Chevrolet, Cadillac and others in the country.

The most successful for the assembly of foreign cars was 2013, when a half dozen assembly plants produced almost 1.5 million new foreign cars. Let's also note that for 9 months of 2017 in Russia 728 thousand foreign cars were assembled, which is more by 22% than in the same period of the last year. The share of foreign cars in the Russian car industry is now 75% of the total production of cars.
