The Korean automotive industry has grown into a world class industry, since its government-driven inception in the 1980s. Today, South Korea is a major manufacturer of automobiles and ranks fifth in the world, behind China, Japan, USA and Germany. In 2010, 4.3 million vehicles were produced, a 21% increase from 2009. Over the last five years, South Korea has also developed into a major exporter of vehicles, exporting roughly two-thirds of its total production. Although the domestic automotive market is characterised as being saturated, South Korea’s proximity to China and ASEAN markets means that export opportunities, for both vehicles and components, will continue to increase.
